Of Smiling Moons And Goodbyes

Tonight is the night of the "smiling moon." I've taken the liberty of using the above photo which Acidsulfurik[heavy workload] uploaded to Flickr to give you an idea of the magnificent sight to which the heavens treated us tonight here in Manila. If you'll look at the night sky in the U.S., where most of my blog visitors come from, what you'll probably see is the inverted version--a frowning moon, if you will. And the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) waited all this time to announce officially that the U.S. economy entered a recession in December 2007. Hmm...are they astronomers, too?

PinoyAmbisyoso.com explains this phenomenon:

The smiling moon phenomenon happens every 48 years, so don’t miss it! “Astronomers say Venus and Jupiter and a crescent moon will form a smiley face tonight, with the planets forming the eyes and the moon forming the mouth. Venus and Jupiter have appeared side by side in the evening sky over the last week or so, but tonight will be the best night to see the “face” appear, astronomers say.”

Actually, I've been waiting for a sign when I should cut cleanly from this blog, as I must really move on to other things. Blogging has been fun and rewarding, but it does take so much time from me. Writing a finance blog is not like recording the highs and lows of my day in diary-like fashion. If you're a finance blogger like me, you know what I mean; there is a constant need to keep abreast of current events, be conversant with the issues involved and do lots of research to be able to write a sensible post every single time. That I was able to earn a PageRank of 4 (out of 10) from Google in the short time I have blogged gives me a warm feeling because investment banking is not exactly a popular topic on the blogosphere. Though I don't intend to take down this blog, I stand to lose my hard-earned PageRank over time, with inactivity.

Tonight, I'm glad the moon smiled at me on this first day of December. It's an auspicious celestial event to mark this blog's anniversary month--you see, I started blogging in December 2006. Thus, today seems like a good day to put a closure to this chapter of an investment banker's life and to start a new one. I cannot possibly thank enough the subscribers and regular readers of this blog; I will miss your loyal patronage. I trust, however, that you'll understand it's also time for me to move on...
