Update: IHT Subprime Write-down League Table

The International Herald Tribune published the following write-down league table together with Louise Story's article titled "Banks racing to raise more capital." This appeared as a small clickable graphic which busy readers are likely to miss (I actually did the first time), so I thought there is some value in posting it here.

This is supposed to update an earlier IHT subprime write-down table I posted in this blog. However, when I did a quick comparison of the figures in the present table with the earlier one, I noted that Societe Generale's figure in the table below ($3.9 billion) is apparently lower than the previous one ($4.9 billion) by a billion dollars. Also, the composition of the league members and their rankings raise some doubts with regard to consistency of the data series used in preparing these two tables. Now, why is that so?

The source footnoted in the earlier table was Reuters, while in the present one, it's Bloomberg. I'm not sure if Reuters and Bloomberg share the same data series, to begin with. Could this explain the discrepancy? Whatever the reason, just be forewarned about this observation when you use these data for whatever purpose you may have for it in your line of work or studies.
